Construction Technology and Quality Control of Geocell Retaining Walls

Apr 03, 2025

1. Construction Preparation

Material Selection:

Geocells with certified tensile/tear strength; well-graded permeable fillers (sandy/gravel soil).

Site Layout:

Survey wall alignment/elevation; establish control benchmarks.

Ground Improvement:

Compact/level subgrade; stabilize soft soils via replacement or reinforcement.

2. Foundation Works

Excavation:

Dig trenches to design depth/width; maintain stable side slopes.

Base Treatment:

Remove weathered rock layers or compact soil (≥95% density). Install dewatering systems if needed.

Base Construction:

Pour concrete footings or install compacted granular layers (≤30cm lifts).

3. Geocell Installation

Deployment:

Unfold geocells along slope/wall face; avoid damage during handling.

Anchoring:

Secure to foundation with anchors (spacing per design); ensure full contact with substrate.

Interconnection:

Join adjacent units with certified connectors; verify seam integrity.

4. Backfilling & Compaction

Fill Placement:

Layer fill in ≤30cm increments at optimal moisture content.

Compaction:

Compact from edges inward (≥90% density); prevent geocell distortion.

5. Facade & Drainage Systems

Panel Installation (if applicable):

Mount precast panels with alignment checks; seal joints.

Drainage:

Embed vertical weep holes (PVC, 5–10cm dia. @ 2–3m spacing) and gravel-filled French drains.

Filter Layers:

Wrap drains with ≥30cm sand/gravel filters to prevent clogging.

6. Capping & Appurtenances

Top Seal:

Apply concrete/mortar cap with drainage slope.

Safety Features:

Install railings/guardrails compliant with codes.

7. Quality Assurance

Material Tests:

Validate geocell/filler properties via lab/field tests.

Process Control:

Monitor foundation integrity, compaction, and alignment at critical stages.

Final Inspection:

Assess wall dimensions, stability, and drainage function before approval.
