Hydropower Project Geomembrane

Hydropower Project Geomembrane

Geomembranes have been used in dams since 1959 and their use in hydropower structures continues to grow. Geomembranes have been used, exposed, and covered, for rehabilitation and new construction.

Applications

In Hydropower Projects, the purpose of geomembranes is to prevent leakage of the dam body or dam foundation. They are used for both new dams and for repairing and raising old dams, including:

(1) Used as upstream sloping walls;
(2) Double-layer masonry, used as both sloping walls and upstream coverings;
(3) Dams built on permeable foundations, with double-layer lining coverings and single-layer membranes as sloping walls;
(4) Single-layer coverings;
(5) In areas with weak layers or easily damaged areas under the cover, single-layer geomembranes are used for coverings. The soil is reinforced with geogrids or high-strength, high-modulus geotextiles;

(6) Geomembranes are used for vertical anti-seepage;

(7) Vertical anti-seepage walls that run through the dam body can be used for new or old dams;

(8) Broken-line anti-seepage walls are welded piece by piece and extended upwards during the construction of the fill in the new dam;

(9) Anti-seepage walls used to raise the dam body when the old dam is raised;

(10) For dams made of two materials with different compressibility, geomembranes are used on the dam slope at the interface between the two materials to prevent cracks from leaking;

(11) For old dams with water leakage, geomembranes are used as inclined walls;

(12) Geomembranes are used to repair foundation holes, etc.

Application

Geomembranes are increasingly being used as a waterproofing material in channel anti-seepage and water-saving renovations and hydropower projects. Compared to traditional anti-seepage methods, using geomembranes as the primary waterproofing layer not only effectively meets the project's anti-seepage objectives, but also offers excellent performance in water-saving maintenance and retrofit reinforcement due to their ease of construction and material properties. Furthermore, with continuous innovations in geomembrane production processes, they are finding use in a growing number of applications, such as landfills, tailings dams, aquaculture, brine evaporation ponds, and drinking water reservoirs.
