Geomembrane is a high-density synthetic lining. It is installed as a barrier to prevent water or other liquids from entering the soil. Compared to natural or clay liners, they are more effective and cost-effective in preventing pollutants from migrating to soil and groundwater.

Installing geomembranes in landfills is a complex process that requires appropriate planning and execution. The following steps should be taken:

1. Site preparation: The site must be cleared of debris, rocks, and vegetation to provide a smooth surface for the installation of geomembranes.

2. Selection of geomembrane: The appropriate type of geomembrane should be selected based on factors such as waste type, climate, and soil conditions.

3. Installation of geomembrane: The geomembrane should be placed on a prepared surface and secured with anchors, tensioning devices, and heavy objects.

4. Jointing: Proper jointing of geomembranes is crucial to ensure that the system is leak free. Perform joint testing after installation to confirm its integrity.

5. Protective layer: The geomembrane must be covered with an additional protective layer, such as geotextile, to prevent the lining from being pierced by sharp objects or fragments.

6. Monitoring: A system for monitoring the surface of geomembranes should be established to detect any leaks or defects.
