Why use geomembranes for spirulina ponds?
Cost-Effectiveness: For large-scale cultivation, using geomembranes is significantly less expensive than building concrete tanks or purchasing multiple rigid plastic or fiberglass ponds.
Customizable and Scalable: You can build ponds of nearly any size and shape based on existing land (although flumes are the most common). Expansion is also relatively easy; simply dig another pond and line it.
Durability: High-quality geomembranes, such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), are UV-resistant, chemically stable, and puncture-resistant, offering a long service life (over 20 years).
Smooth Surface: A smooth surface prevents algae from attaching to the pond walls, making it easier to clean and minimizing harborage for contaminating bacteria or protozoa.
Waterproof: Provides a perfect barrier to prevent water loss and seepage, and protects groundwater from nutrient-rich overflow contamination.
Installation Speed: Excavation and installation of lined ponds are much faster than the construction and maintenance of concrete ponds.
Material Advantages
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is the most common choice. It offers excellent chemical resistance, high UV stability, strong puncture resistance, and a long lifespan. Food-grade materials are also available. However, it can be stiff and difficult to install in complex shapes; seams require specialized welding. Suitable for large, permanent outdoor runway ponds.
